First Utility enlists help from students to drive change
Last year, a study revealed that the UK is ranked second in Europe for the most innovative universities and we are proud to boast about the opportunity we had to work with some of these great students. We recently teamed up with Warwick University, which is included in Europe’s top 100 innovative universities, to use behavioural science theories to come up with ideas to encourage our customers to save energy in order to reduce bills and contribute to the UK’s move towards lower carbon emissions.
The Nudgeathon – a behavioural change competition organised by Warwick Business School – saw teams made up of students from 24 countries and various universities pitch their energy-saving ideas to a panel of judges which included our very own Chief Information Officer, Bill Wilkins.
Here’s what Bill had to say:
“I think it’s extremely important for First Utility to be involved in such events. As an energy company that strives to be different from the rest, we are always looking for ways to do more for our customers. Taking part in the competition has given us ideas on how to use behavioural science theories to find new ways to encourage our customers to spend less than they have to on their energy bills and more on what they want."
Whilst we’re well aware that the energy industry isn’t historically seen as innovative, or in fact interesting, we still aim to challenge this perception by continuously looking to pioneer better ways to engage the public and save them money.
We know that such events can be really valuable as they enable us to learn how to tackle the issue of customer disengagement around energy, learn from different experts as well as give us the opportunity to invest in future graduates.
But we’re not stopping here. In order for us to challenge the pace of change and the traditional thinking about energy companies, we want to continue to change the industry for the benefit of our customers. Whether that’s done through investing in the latest technology, branching out to offer broadband or calling for policy change to help people save money, we hope to continue to do more for our customers and never, ever rest on our laurels.
