Hello

Saving money

The top five energy guzzling gadgets

Homes across the UK could save a collective £600 million a year on their energy bills by switching off electronic gadgets, according to new data.

But that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your modern home comforts. We’ve pulled together some tips for using your favourite gadgets and gizmos in more energy efficient ways.

Plasma TV, £98 a year

The most power-hungry gadget of them all, the plasma TV guzzles 658 kWh per year (as opposed to LED TVs, which are more energy efficient). You can save money on your energy bills by using an energy saving mode, adjusting the brightness and turning your TV off rather than using standby.

Fridge Freezer, £62 a year

You can make your fridge-freezer more energy-efficient by defrosting it regularly and keeping it well stocked (but not overcrowded). You don’t need to buy extra food to keep your fridge-freezer fully stocked – ice trays are great for filling up gaps.

Tumble Dryer, £57 a year

A tumble dryer can add £57 a year onto your energy bill and a combined washer-drier can clock your energy bill up by £81 a year. You can improve your dryer’s energy efficiency by only washing full loads and by using a lower heat setting. Win win.

Electric cooker, £46 a year

Your electric hob can be slow to heat and costly to run, so it’s worth making the most of its ‘on’ time by cooking several meals at once (so it doesn’t waste so much energy heating up and cooling down) and freezing some meals for later. The microwave is a more energy-efficient alternative.

Dishwasher, £42 a year

A full-size dishwasher uses a whopping 294 kWh in energy a year. You can save energy by always making sure your dishwasher is completely full before you power it up and by washing small, easy items by hand.
