What is a prepayment meter?

A prepayment meter allows you to pay for your gas and electricity as you use it, meaning you don’t get a bill at the end of the month. If you need to, you can also pay off outstanding debt at an agreed rate. If you have a smart prepayment meter you may also have an in-home display unit, which you can use to manage how much energy you’re using.

How can I request a prepayment meter?

How do prepayment meters work?

A prepayment meter allows you to pay for your usage as you use it. You do this by adding money to a key or card, which is then inserted into the meter to transfer the credit ready to use. The balance of the meter is then reduced according to the amount of energy you use, the daily standing charge and any debt you may be paying off. When the balance of the meter gets low, you’ll need to apply more credit to maintain supply to your property.
