Meet the management team
Ian's deeply held belief is that there is something fundamentally unjust and wrong about an industry where at least 70% of its customers are paying too much. Changing that is at the heart of why First Utility exists. He wants every household in the UK to get a fundamentally cheaper, fairer and more transparent deal on energy, alongside a far better understanding of how energy is used and how energy waste can be reduced for everyone. Ian joined First Utility in 2011 from lastminute.com where he was CEO. He is a Trustee of English Heritage, sits on the Board of VisitBritain and is a member of the ChildLine Board at the NSPCC.
Ed’s goal is for customers to spend less on what they need and more on what they want. Previously President of lastminute.com, he's championed high customer service with low prices for more than a decade. His aim is to empower and engage customers using the latest technology to help save them money on their energy. It’s because of this that Ed made it onto the 2015 Marketing Week Vision 100. When he’s not lobbying the government on behalf of consumers, he puts his energy into movie night with the family.
Phil’s number one priority is delivering first class customer service at First Utility. He joins from Cupid Plc, where he was CEO. This was after spending three years in digital marketing as Chief Operating Officer and holding the title of MD at DigitasLBi. He has a wealth of experience increasing performance and developing strong company cultures. Phil can often be found triathlon training or supporting Newcastle United with his teenage son.
As our technology guru, Bill lives and breathes technology and is passionate about delivering innovative ways to provide our customers with the insights they need to take control of their energy use. In 2015, Bill took the number 10 spot on the CIO 100, which recognises the leading CIOs in the UK who are modernising and driving business change in their organisations. He’s so passionate that you can still find him doing some coding when he’s not inspiring our team of technology wizards to come up with the latest way to engage and empower our customers.
As Co-Founder of First Utility, Darren saw the opportunity to bring the positive experiences from his background in telecoms to give customers a better, fairer, more transparent way of buying energy. He saw smart metering as a way to innovate and disrupt the market by providing customers with insight into their energy usage. Focusing on the trading and regulatory side of things, Darren has been a vocal force for industry reform by advising the Government, Ofgem and the DECC on policy and the need for more competition. When he’s not doing that he spends his time running and keeping track of his three teenage kids.
Martin is an early pioneer of smart metering and drives more energy consumption control to customers, more competitive energy rates, and more transparency on their energy usage. Having previously led two small energy companies in the deregulated market through to acquisition, he brings with him 25 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge. Outside of work Martin puts his energy into motorcycle travels with his Ducati Monster and enjoying family time with his children and grandchildren.
Leading the way when it comes to growing First Utility, Tucker spends his days identifying and developing plans for expansion with a range of strategic partners. With a background in the commodities market from Morgan Stanley and technology at IBM, he works on executing innovative technology solutions within a utilities market. Tucker also puts his energy into surfing and snowboarding, or running through Hyde Park with his children.
With over 15 years of marketing and strategy experience, Jill is all about putting the customer first. Before joining First Utility, Jill was the Managing Director for Cardlytics UK, a data and advertising company. She’s also had senior roles at big names such as American Express and Lloyds Banking Group. She’s well travelled and has lived in some of the greatest cities, including London, New York and Sydney. Jill now lives in London with her husband and two daughters. The girls keep Jill pretty busy but, if she does get any spare time, she loves to travel and to explore the many restaurants London has to offer.
John’s career has stretched across retail, personal financial services, insurance and utilities. Before joining First Utility, he had a number of senior roles with Nationwide, all the way up to Group HR Director before he left. John is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and has a Master of Arts in Employment Law. John is passionate about raising the bar for excellence in employment. He helped the Government with the removal of the default retirement age and to promote equality in the workplace. He is a Trustee Director of the Nationwide Building Society Pension Fund and a Non-Executive director with the UK Charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind. John is passionate about his work with Guide Dogs and in what spare time he has he enjoys taking the family to various skiing, rugby, sailing and swimming events.
