More about the Standard tariff

Which regions is the first:utility Standard tariff available in?

Our Standard tariff is available in all UK regions.

Download the tariff guide (PDF) to see prices for your region

Is this the cheapest tariff you offer?

No, our Smart (East and West Midlands only) and iSave (available in all other regions) tariffs are the cheapest we offer. They are cheaper because you can only sign up for these online, you must pay your bills by Direct Debit and receive online billing only.

Why should I sign up to your Standard tariff?

If you are looking for the cheapest tariffs we offer then you should register for Smart or iSave. However, if you want a more traditional tariff, then our Standard tariff could be for you. You can choose to pay by cash or cheque (at an additional £4 charge per transaction) and you can receive paper billing.

Are there any reasons why I can't switch to the Standard tariff?

We regret that we won't be able to supply your electricity and gas on our Standard tariff if any of the following apply to you:

  • Your gas service is on an IGT (Independent Gas Transporter) network
  • You have an economy 10 meter
  • Your current electricity and / or gas meters are prepayment
  • Your annual gas consumption exceeds 73,200 kWh
  • You don't pass our credit check process
  • You are already signed up to first:utility

Can you supply me with electricity only or gas only?

No, the Standard tariff is dual fuel (both electricity and gas)

Do I get a smart meter if I'm on the standard tariff?

If you are in the East or West Midlands then we will upgrade your current meter to a smart meter for free. We aim to do this within 60 days from the day your electricity and gas supply transfers to first:utility. Once your smart meter is installed you will receive accurate (not estimated) monthly bills, and there will be no need for you to read your meter yourself as your smart meter will automatically send readings to us. If you are based elsewhere in the UK, you will receive estimated bills until our smart meters become available in your area. We are continuing our nationwide roll-out of free smart meters in 2010.

Will my monthly bill be estimated or accurate?

If you are in the East or West Midlands, then we will install a free smart meter with your electricity and gas which means you will receive accurate monthly bills showing your energy usage, and you won't need to read your meter. If you are based elsewhere in the UK then you will receive estimated monthly bills until smart meters become available in your area and we provide you with a free smart meter.

How do you pay the dual fuel discount?

The 5% dual fuel will be credited to your bill annually, based on a year's consecutive bill payments at the percentage rate detailed on your tariff guide when you signed up.
