Independent Gas Transporters

Independent Gas Transporters (IGTs)

What is an Independent Gas Transporter?

If you are supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) it means that the gas in your home is connected via pipes owned by an Independent Gas Transporter's network, and not National Grid (aka Transco.) IGT’s own and operate gas transportation networks (pipes) which are independent to the national networks owned by National Grid, Scotia Gas Networks, Northern Gas Networks and Wales and West Utilities.

Do first:utility supply customers on IGT networks?

No. Gas connections owned by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) require energy suppliers, like first:utility, to pay both National Grid and the Independent Gas Transporter to deliver gas through the pipes to your home. At present, these charges make it prohibitive for first:utility to supply gas to your home. If your previous supplier served you via an IGT network then you may find that the price you paid them for gas was slightly higher than their standard published price.

How do I know if I am supplied by an IGT network?

Find a copy of a recent gas bill. You will know if you are supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) because your MPRN (meter point reference number - unique to your home) will start with 74, 75 or 76 and will be 10 digits long.

Can I get my supply moved over to a National Grid network?

No. If you are supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) then the National Grid network will generally be too far away to physically connect the pipeline from your home.
