Your online account

Available to customers with smart meters

Along with your free smart meter, we will also provide you with a First Utility online account where you can view your daily energy consumption and monthly bills at your convenience. You have access to your monthly, weekly and daily usage for both electricity and gas, and can even drill down to your half hourly electricity usage. This gives you visibility and control of your energy usage, allowing you to implement changes within your home to reduce utility costs and help the environment.

Your online account also gives you access to previous bills, so you can compare them to your latest bill and identify any affects that your changes have made. In addition, you have the facility to export the data shown online for your own use.

How soon after my smart meter is installed can I view my usage online?

After your smart meter has been installed you will normally be able to view your electricity and gas usage within 72 hours.

I have logged into my online account but I can't see my usage?

If you have only just had your smart meter installed this may be because there has been a delay in setting the communication link up. We aim to have all customer usage data available online within 72 hours of your meter being installed but this process can take longer. If you still cannot view your usage one week after your smart meter installation please email customer.services@first-utility.com and we will get a member of our technical services team to investigate.   If you are an existing customer that regularly views your online usage this may be due to a communication failure. Just like a mobile phone, there are occasions when the signal from your smart meter fails. This is temporary and full visibility will be restored. This will not affect your usage data as the meter stores reads for up to 40 days.

Why isn't my gas usage showing every half hour?

It is only your electricity data that will be displayed half hourly. Gas is shown daily.

How do I use the online graphs?

When you log into your account, navigate to 'view load profile'

  • Select which supply usage you wish to view - either electricity or gas (they are seperate charts)
  • Click 'view usage chart' and initially you will see your usage illustrated by month
  • Click on the bar of the month that you would like to view - your usage will be broken down by days
  • This is as far as you can go with gas
  • You can drill down to the half hour with your electricity usage, to do this, simply click on the bar of day you wish to analyse.
The graphs will plot your gas usage, monthly and daily, and your  electricity usage monthly, daily and half-hourly.   They are a useful indicator of what time you are using the most energy, showing you where you may be wasting energy when the spikes are particularly high. This information can be used to monitor and change your usage behaviour to save you money on your bill.

Is there a way of viewing my electricity usage without going online?

Yes, your First Utility monthly bill will show you a complete breakdown of your energy usage. However, you could purchase an energy monitoring unit for £35. This is a remote, digital monitor that works independently of the smart meter. This device will provide you with a quick estimated view on how much electricity you use at certain times of the day, how much it costs and the level of CO2 your household is emitting. This is not a smart meter and is not 100% accurate. However, it is useful for highlighting where you can cut down on your electricity - you'll be surprised  at just how much power it takes to boil a kettle or run halogen spot lights in your kitchen!   Find out more about energy monitoring units
