About the standard tariff
If you are looking for a traditional tariff, then our Standard tariff could be for you. Our Standard tariff is not our cheapest tariff, but is designed to be flexible. You can choose to pay by cash or cheque (at an additional £4 charge per transaction) and you can also receive paper billing.
If you are based in the East or West Midlands you are eligible for our Smart tariff - one of the cheapest dual fuel tariff available in the UK. When you register for our Smart tariff, you will receive a free smart meter. First Utility is the only UK energy company to roll out innovative smart meters for free, giving you control over your energy usage and helping you save money.
Smart meters are currently only available to customers in the East and West Midlands, but we will be rolling them out nationwide in 2010. Until then, if you are based elsewhere in the UK you can still benefit from some of the cheapest electricity and gas rates around with our iSave tariff.

- Is this the cheapest tariff you offer?
No, our Smart (East Midlands and West Midlands only) and iSave (available in all other regions) tariffs are the cheapest we offer. Both of these tariffs are online services, they require you to sign up online, pay your bills by Direct Debit and receive online billing. This allows us to keep our overheads low and pass the savings directly to you.
- Why should I sign up to your Standard tariff?
If you are looking for the cheapest tariffs we offer then you should register for our Smart or iSave tariffs. However, if you want a more traditional tariff, then our Standard tariff could be for you. Our Standard tariff gives you the option to pay by cash or cheque (at an additional £4 charge per transaction) and you can receive paper billing.
- Are there any reasons why I can't switch to the Standard tariff?
We regret that we won't be able to supply your electricity and gas on our Standard tariff if any of the following apply to you:
- You have an economy 10 meter
- Your current electricity and / or gas meters are prepayment
- Your annual gas consumption exceeds 73,200 kWh
- You don't pass our credit check process
- You are already signed up to First Utility
- You have multiple or de energized MPANS
- Can you supply me with electricity only or gas only?
No, the Standard tariff is dual fuel only (both electricity and gas)
- Do I get a smart meter if I'm on the standard tariff?
If you are in the East Midlands or West Midlands then you can upgrade to our smart tariff, and we will install a smart meter free of charge. We aim to do this within 60 days from the day your electricity and gas supply transfers to First Utility. Once your smart meter is installed you will receive accurate (not estimated) monthly bills, and there will be no need for you to read your meter yourself as your smart meter will automatically send readings to us. If you are based elsewhere in the UK, you will receive estimated bills until our smart meters become available in your area. We are continuing our nationwide roll-out of free smart meters in 2010.
- Will my monthly bill be estimated or accurate?
If you are in the East Midlands or West Midlands, then we will install a free smart meter with your electricity and gas if you wish to upgrade to our smart tariff. This means you will receive accurate monthly bills showing your energy usage through smart meter technology, and you won't need to read you meter. If you are based elsewhere in the UK then you will receive estimated monthly bills until smart meters become available in your area.
- Summary of Terms and Conditions - Standard Tariff
This is a summary of the key parts of First Utility's Terms and Conditions. It is not and should not be regarded as a substitute for First Utility's Terms & Conditions, which should be read in their entirety.
Charges for the supply of electricity and gas
Our rates are detailed in this tariff sheet but may be amended from time to time. Any amendments to the tariff will, where practical, be communicated to you within a minimum of 35 days after the change has been implemented. If the change to your tariff is to your significant disadvantage, when compared to the rest of the industry, subject to clause 2.3 of the Terms and Conditions, you may terminate the contract.
Additional charges
All of the tariffs quoted are applicable to Direct Debit payments and online billing. If you would like to pay by cheque you will be charged £4 to cover the cost of administrating this service. This charge will be applied monthly to your bill.
Switching from your current supplier
This is a dual fuel product. When we transfer your supply to First Utility we will move your electricity and then your gas. If your current supplier objects to the transfer of your gas we will supply you with electricity only. Should this happen you can choose either to take an electricity only service, or leave First Utility.
Billing
You will receive a monthly, variable bill. This means your monthly bill could go up and down depending on how much electricity and gas you use. You therefore only pay for what you use.
Dual fuel discount
The dual fuel discount of 5% will be credited annually (based on a year’s consecutive bill payments).
Prices
We will commit to protect you against price increases for a minimum of 3 months.
Leaving First Utility
This tariff has no exit fee. You can leave with 28 days notice at any time without penalty. This may affect your dual fuel discount.
