About the smart tariff

Switch to our smart tariff and be one of the first in the UK to have a smart meter. You will also benefit from the freedom of no contractual tie in, accurate monthly bills and complete visibility of your energy usage.

As a smart tariff customer you will receive a free smart meter that takes accurate readings of your electricity usage every half an hour and your gas daily. Reads are automatically sent to our head office where we convert them into easy to understand graphs that are displayed on your online account. You will receive accurate monthly bills based on your actual usage, putting an end to estimated bills, meaning you only pay for what you use.

Our smart tariff is available now to all customers who live in the East Midlands and West Midlands. We will be rolling smart metering out across the UK throughout 2010. Our iSave customers will be the first to be offered a free smart meter.

Questions about the smart tariff

Can you supply me with electricity only?

No. The Smart tariff is dual fuel only.

How do you pay the dual fuel discount?

The duel fuel discount will be credited annually, based on a year's consecutive Direct Debit payments at the percentage rate detailed on your tariff guide when you signed up.

What happens after I sign-up online for this tariff?

Because we need to install one of our smart meters in your home, the switching process is slightly different to normal. Once you have registered, it takes approximately 40 days to transfer your energy supply to First Utility. Within 60 days of your supply start date we will ask you to choose your smart meter installation date. How quickly we install your smart meter will depend on the availability of appointments within your area. You will receive monthly bills from us, with the opportunity each month to submit an accurate meter reading up until the point your smart meter is installed.   For more information on the switching process please click here.

Do you still offer two rate and three rate tariffs?

Yes. We offer prices for two rate (day and night) and three rate (morning, afternoon, night). This option is only available to customers already on one of our Smart tariffs. We advise that you do not change your tariff until your smart meter has been fully operational in your home for three to twelve months. This is so that you can choose the rate that suits your energy usage habits best. Our customer service agents are well placed to look at your usage patterns and advise you whether you will be best staying with single rate, or changing to two or three rate. To discuss this option and find out our current rates please contact our customer service team on 0845 215 5000.

Will the prices set out in the Smart tariff be the same throughout my contract?

All customers with smart meters installed are protected against any wholesale rises in gas and electricity for the first three months of joining us. The tariff is variable from this point onwards.

Will you notify me if your prices change and what notice will you give me?

Yes. Any amendments to your chosen tariff will, where practical, be communicated to you within a minimum of 35 days after the change has been implemented. If the change to your tariff is to your significant disadvantage, when compared to the rest of the industry, subject to clause 2.3 of our Terms & Conditions, you may terminate the contract.

Is there a cancellation fee?

No. Customers who sign up to our Smart or iSave tariffs are not contracted to First Utility and therefore will not have to pay a cancellation fee. However, if you are an existing customer on a two year contract and have been with First Utility for less than 2 years, a cancellation fee of £50 per fuel may apply. This will be detailed in the tariff sheet you were given at the time you signed up to First Utility. If you are unsure whether this fee will apply to you please call Customer Services on 0845 215 5000 quoting your account number and they will be able to tell you.

When will the Smart tariff be available in my region?

Our aim is to make the Smart tariff available nationwide as soon as possible. For now, if you are based elsewhere in the UK, you can still benefit from some of the cheapest electricity and gas rates around with our iSave tariff.  You don't get a smart meter with the  iSave tariff but you can submit monthly meter reads to ensure you are only paying for what you use. Becoming a First Utility customer on the iSave tariff also means you will be offered a smart meter as soon as they become available in your region.

What's the difference between an electricity monitor and a smart meter?

An electricity monitor, or energy monitoring unit, is a visual device that you can have in your home, which will give you a quick estimated view of how much electricity you use at certain times of the day, how much it costs and the level of CO2 your household is emitting. It is not a smart meter - only smart meters give accurate energy bills based on actual usage - but it can be useful for highlighting where you can cut down on your electricity.

Will a smart meter save me money?

Smart meters provide online visibility of your energy usage, giving you the opportunity to see where you use the most energy, where you waste energy and how you can change your behaviour to save energy and save money.   "Smart meters can reduce household energy bills by 5-10%" Energy Saving Trust

Are the prices quoted on your website the lowest you offer?

Yes, we always publish our most competitive rates.
