First Utility, today announced a partnership with Google to bring Google PowerMeter to the UK.

 

Google PowerMeter is a software tool that allows users to see a near-real-time display of their energy usage through their iGoogle account on their computer or mobile phone, all enabled by first:utility’s innovative smart meter technology.

 

First Utility is the only energy supplier in the UK to provide free smart meters to its customers, rolling them out across the UK in a region-by-region approach, starting with the Midlands. To date first:utility, which launched to the residential market in September 2008, has over 30,000 customers signed up to its service.

 

Crucially, and unlike other systems, first:utility’s Google PowerMeter service is free, and is due to go live in early November (2009).

Currently, first:utility customers can get access to their up-to-date energy usage and cost information online 24/7 via the first:utility customer web site or view their energy usage patterns on a Home Display Unit.  Google PowerMeter, which relies on the accurate energy data relayed from first:utility’s smart meter technology, is a complimentary means through which first:utility customers will be able to manage their energy consumption, empowering them with the information to help lower their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

First Utility, the UK’s first smart meter energy supplier, was announced as the winner of the prestigious ‘Housing Product of the Year’ award at last night’s Housebuilding Innovation Awards.

 

First Utility’s entry focused on the company’s roll out of smart metered electricity and gas across the UK, working with the likes of Galliard Homes, Miller Homes and The Andersons Group to install smart meters in over 13,000 new homes being built in the UK.

 

Martin Moir, Head of Sales at first:utility, who was presented with the award by the evening’s host, author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, said: “first:utility’s offering is a compelling proposition for house builders and developers, particularly with an increasing emphasis on sustainable housing, and it’s great to get recognition from the industry.”

 

The judges comments included the fact that first:utility is “…a company that knows housebuilders and their needs well”. Lord Hunt, Minister of State at the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), has praised independent energy firm First Utility (www.first-utility.com) during a visit to the company’s Warwick HQ today.

 

Speaking during the visit, Lord Hunt said: “Encouraging greater competition in the UK’s energy market is a key part of Labour’s green manifesto and innovative new suppliers such as First Utility are a key way of achieving a more competitive energy landscape.

 

 “Smart metering in the energy sector is vital if we are to achieve our environmental targets as a country. Smart meters are arguably the most critical element of a green infrastructure of the future and it’s extremely encouraging to see a smaller supplier challenging the current status quo in the marketplace and using more modern technology to solve some of the key issues for consumers.”

 

Lord Hunt’s comments come just days after the Labour party pledged to end the dominance of the ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers in the UK. In launching its green manifesto, the Party also stated that it would ‘consider measures such as limiting the ability of energy companies to generate electricity solely for themselves and reducing the barriers to the changing of licence conditions’.

The three year contract means that first:utility will supply all new-build Miller Homes with energy and dual fuel smart meters. The award winning housebuilder is the sixth largest in the UK and is aiming to build over 2000 homes by the end of 2010.

 

First Utility won the business as part of a competitive tender, against nine other companies. Miller Homes’ brief demanded a national smart meter supplier which would be scalable and able to meet their energy supply needs as a developer and house builder of energy efficient homes.

Challenger energy company, First Utility (www.first-utility.com), the UK’s first smart meter energy supplier, has today announced the first energy price reductions of 2010 with new tariff iSaveV2, which makes First Utility the cheapest energy supplier in the country.

 

The price reductions mean that, for the first time in almost two years, the average cost of an annual residential energy bill in the UK with first:utility is less than £900, at £898.

 

Customers on the new iSaveV2 tariff will be offered the option to get a free smart meter installed in the coming months as First Utility continues its free roll-out of smart meters across UK households. The company is currently installing free smart meters for Midlands and East Midlands customers, and will announce the next phase of the roll-out in the coming weeks. In the meantime, customers will be incentivised to submit regular meter readings online, with financial rewards for doing so; they will also receive monthly bills – the benefits being more control for the customer as they will have an accurate bill and greater knowledge of their monthly energy spend, instead of waiting for a quarterly bill (which is often an inaccurate estimate).

The Smart Online Saver V3 tariff will provide significant savings to households in East Midlands compared with other suppliers:
•    for instance the average bill at medium consumption on British Gas’ recently launched Web Saver 5 dual fuel tariff is £930 (mids) / £893 (e.mids); First Utility’s average bill for the Midlands is £902/ East Midlands is £861.  This equates to a saving of £28 (Midlands) / £32 (e.mids) a year.

First Utility (www.first-utility.com), the UK’s leading independent energy supplier, is once again the UK’s cheapest dual fuel provider due to price cuts to its iSave and Smart tariff. 

 

Within hours of E.ON announcing that its FixOnline V3 tariff was the cheapest earlier today, First Utility has adjusted its iSave dual fuel prices to ensure that it remains in the top spot.  For customers in the East and West Midlands, it has also reduced prices on its Smart tariff, which means that they too will see a drop in their energy bills, as well as receiving a free smart meter.

 

The move means that first:utility remains the UK’s cheapest energy supplier, undercutting E.ON. An average iSave energy bill with First Utility is now £954 compared to £961.77 with E.ON.  An average Smart energy bill with First Utility is now £944.  first:utility will guarantee these iSave and Smart tariff energy prices for a minimum of 3months.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 5th November at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel in London.

will no longer charge customers to replace their electricity and gas meters with its innovative smart
meters. Previously, an installation cost of £49 per meter was charged for electricity only and £99 for gas
and electric.

Ongoing government consultations suggest a widespread roll-out will not be enforced until around 2010.

Independent energy company, First Utility, today announced it  is adding gas to its UK-wide energy offering to become the cheapest dual fuel provider for all UK households. Its standard tariff now undercuts all of the Big Six energy companies.

 

This follows on from last month’s announcement that First Utility  was the first – and as yet only –  energy company to bring down its electricity prices following falling wholesale prices in order to pass on price cuts to the consumer. 

 

In addition, consumers will be able to save up to a further 15% on their annual bill when combined with the benefits of the smart meter – which First Utility offer to all of their customers as standard – again, another UK first.
